China Arrests Online Bet Through Philippines: Report

Fourteen suspects in a "gambling" allegedly linked to five betting websites based in the Philippines have been arrested in China, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported.

Police in China's Anhui province estimated that online operations reportedly targeted Chinese consumers over the past three years had racked up nearly 10 billion yuan ($1.57 billion) in wages, CCTV reported on Monday.

Chen Li-kun, of the public security bureau in Dongzhi Prefecture in Anhui province, said the investigation showed "actual operating locations" at five gambling sites were in the Philippines.

He said the sites have a total of more than 200,000 "member" sponsors across mainland China.

Chen said the 14 arrested on charges of "cross-border gambling" spread across China's Jiangxi, Fujian and Chongqing provinces. The arrests targeted those who allegedly helped run gambling websites and settle players' wages.

The case is still under further investigation, he added.

The Public Security Ministry said last week that a "special plan" against cross-border gambling had been launched nationwide for six months during the month of March.

It says it focuses on financing networks in the mainland that are known to support cross-border gambling activities, and is focused on closing or blocking gambling websites and phone applications.

Mainland authorities have outlined several recent efforts to curb cross-border gambling. China's public security ministry said in a statement released in January that authorities dismantled "more than 2,200 internet gambling platforms" and "more than 1,600 illegal payment platforms and underground banks" in 2021.
