Lee Sam-gul, CEO of Kangwon Land Co., Ltd. Resigns: Report

The CEO of Kangwon Land, the operator of Kangwon Land (pictured), the resort where the country's only casino is open to locals, resigned from a company meeting earlier Friday, local media reported.

In April 2021, Isamgal was appointed to a three-year term and was scheduled to run until April 2024.

"Kangwon Land is leaving in a difficult situation, but I hope the remaining people will work harder," he was quoted as saying to preserve the organization's legacy.

The company's Kangwon Land Resort is located on a remote upland, a three-hour drive east of Seoul. Part of its function is to financially support the community, which is a former mining area.

Korean media reported that politicians, community representatives, and some members of the company have been calling for Lee's resignation. Media outlets cited community figures on Lee's side who cited "lack of communication" and "ignorance of local small businesses."

Former South Korean presidential office aide Choi Chul-kyu will be ratified as vice president of Kangwon Land Inc. at a shareholders' meeting scheduled for Dec. 5, according to media reports.

In June, the government's annual "Public Institution Performance Assessment" gave the company a "D" rating - the lowest rating ever for Kangwon Land, Inc. The cited factors included a lack of "customer-attracting content" at the resort, inefficiency in labor costs, workplace sexual harassment and harassment, and corruption related to staffing.
